Calorie shifting diet - is this another fad diet or does it work?
A novel approach to weight loss is a device called calorie shifting. The object of this technique is to prevent your body’s metabolism from slowing down. The natural course of events is for your metabolism to slow as you diet and begin eating less and less. This is because the human body is meant to hold some fat in storage for future use. When the body senses that it is at risk of starvation, it slows the metabolism to prevent the loss of too much of the fat stores.
Calorie shifting fights against this natural law by deceiving your body. It prevents it from learning that its fat stores are at risk.
Take for example; if you were following a strict 1000 calorie a day diet you would probably not lose any weight. So instead of this you alter the amounts of calories that your body gets. So you could have 100 calories one day and then the next day eat 1200, then you could go back down to 900 a day and so on. This way your body does not become militant to the specific amounts of calories and as it never knows what it is going to get; your metabolism works at its normal fast rate. You are in effect playing a trick against your body.
Most people who try this approach wonder why they ever used any other dieting approach. After all, with this method, they might have to go without much to eat today, but they know that tomorrow, they can have a day eating the foods they love. It never gets boring, and so people tend to stick with the diet longer.
So let’s get practical and discuss how you can put the diet shifting approach to work. The recommended approach is 4 days on, 4 days off. This means that you spend 4 days of the week eating very few calories, and almost all should come from low-fat foods. The other 3 you can consider your reward days. On those three you eat a higher calorie amount from the foods you’ve come to knmow and love. Then go back to the 4 days of low-fat, then 3 days of more calories, etc. This will make sure your metabolism stays at peak level and will help you lose weight and keep it off.
Remember that the human body adapts well, and it adapts quickly. Therefore it’s important that you never have the same calorie count twice in a row. Change it up regularly, otherwise your body will soon learn what days to expect more calories, and what days to expect less. Keep a journal so you know how many calories you’ve had on any particular day. Never get in a rut! Change, change, change!
If you’re one of those who has thus far found permanent weight loss evasive, take heart! The calorie shifting diet might be just what the doctor ordered, and might be your key to permanent success.
Oh and one more very important thing - drink lots of water! Yes, water is good. It helps to flush out toxic wastes in your body and ensures that your body is not retaining water because of the lack of it.
